Spirulina, a superfood also good for hair

A highly nutritious microalgae

Spirulina needs no introduction. It is one of the most nutritionally interesting foods and has many recognized health properties. This microalgae is a cyanobacteria (a microorganism capable of photosynthesis) of blue-green color. It is consumed as food or a dietary supplement in various parts of the world.

Vegetarians appreciate it for its high protein content and those deficient in iron consume it to replenish their stores. Athletes consume it for its energizing and anti-fatigue properties.

It is even recommended against malnutrition in some UN food aid programs.

Spirulina, a superfood with recognized virtues

Spirulina is one of the richest foods in protein, while having a low caloric intake (about 3 grams of protein for 5 grams of spirulina powder). It is also exceptionally rich in iron.

It is a food that contains many essential fatty acids of the omega-6 type and amino acids, and carotenoids (mainly beta-carotene, which provides provitamin A). Finally, its blue-green color is due to a pigment, phycocyanin, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants.

This incredibly nutritious cocktail is excellent for combating transient fatigue, providing physical and mental energy, and addressing deficiencies in the case of an unbalanced diet.

Thanks to its antioxidant properties, spirulina helps fight against cellular aging, and strengthen the body in general. Therefore, spirulina is also excellent cosmetically for the body. And especially for hair!

Why is spirulina good for hair?

Factors such as pollution, poor diet, or lack of exercise can cause hair fragility.

For beautiful hair, what does the body need? Vitamins, minerals, iron, and proteins. Nutrients provided by a balanced diet, if necessary supplemented by superfoods on a temporary or regular basis throughout the year.

The exceptional richness of spirulina in proteins and iron helps the body produce keratin, the basic substance that makes up hair. Therefore, the hair will be stronger and grow faster thanks to this microalgae. Its antioxidant properties help delay hair loss, dandruff development, and the appearance of gray hair by stimulating cellular renewal at the scalp level.

Spirulina also contains B-group vitamins (B6 and B12 notably), THE hair vitamin par excellence. Indeed, B vitamin intake helps counter hair loss and strengthen hair.

Vitamin B12 is very important for the body, yet it is only found in animal products and a few plants like spirulina, hence the need to consume B12 supplements when one is vegetarian. Note that the bioavailability of vitamin B12 in spirulina is still debated.

Very dry and damaged hair also needs vitamin A, which allows cellular renewal. Spirulina contains 12 times more provitamin A than carrots! An exceptional contribution therefore, perfect to help repair your hair but also good for skin and nails.

Finally, spirulina is well endowed with zinc, an essential trace element for hair, as it synthesizes keratin and collagen, two proteins forming the hair fiber. Zinc improves hair resistance and thus limits breakage and hair loss.

Buy organic spirulina: my selection

I recommend organic spirulina from Nutri&Co laboratory. It is certified organic AB and traced to its cultivation farm.

I particularly recommend this spirulina because the quality/price ratio is particularly interesting (4 cents per tablet, which is below the market average).

It contains 17% phycocyanin and is guaranteed R.A.W.™ (dried and compressed cold).

We really like Nutri&Co because this French brand is truly expert (see their blog especially). By eliminating all middlemen, the company can offer high-quality products at an affordable price.

How to use spirulina for hair?

Spirulina for hair, internal use

Spirulina can be used in two ways: internally as a food or dietary supplement, and externally directly on the hair.

Spirulina is generally found in dry, freeze-dried form, as a powder, flakes, or tablets. Tablets are taken as a course every morning to strengthen the body. In powder form, it can be consumed as is, or mixed with a smoothie or juice for breakfast.

Fresh spirulina can also be consumed. More expensive and harder to find (often directly from producers), it is consumed in small amounts in culinary preparations.

A three-week spirulina course will strengthen your hair and reduce hair loss. It is preferable to do the course during seasonal changes, for example, in autumn when hair loss is more significant. Results are often visible after about ten days.

Even though it’s a natural food, overdoses are avoided by following the dosage recommended by manufacturers.

Spirulina for hair, external use

Spirulina powder is ideal for external use: it is used directly on the skin and hair by mixing it with water or natural cosmetic products.

For external use of spirulina, you can prepare a hair mask or add it to shampoo. Use organic washing bases sold on natural cosmetics sites to create your own blends.

For example, for a spirulina shampoo, mix a teaspoon of spirulina powder with a dose of washing base for shampooing once or twice a week.

Spirulina hair mask recipes

Damaged hair: a repairing mask

  • 1 tablespoon of spirulina powder
  • 1 organic yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of agave syrup or honey

Mix everything in a bowl, apply to the entire hair, massage the scalp, and leave on for one to two hours. Rinse thoroughly and do a regular shampoo to remove residues. Your hair will be much stronger and shinier!

Dry or frizzy hair : a super-nourishing mask

  • 4 tablespoons of coconut oil or cream
  • 1 tablespoon of spirulina powder
  • 1 teaspoon of castor oil
  • ½ avocado (optional)

Mix all the ingredients: if adding the avocado, use a blender for a smoother texture, and apply it over the entire hair. Thanks to this super-nourishing mask, your frizzy hair will regain its strength, vitality, and you will have beautifully defined curls.

All hair types: an oatmeal moisturizing cream

  • 1 teaspoon of spirulina
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 150g of homemade oat cream (to make yourself)

To make the oat cream, mix 2 tablespoons of oatmeal with 250mL of water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, and when the mixture boils, turn off the heat after 1 min. Then wait about 5 minutes for the mixture to thicken. Finally, pour the mixture into a sieve over a container and press the flakes against the sides to extract the cream.

Add the honey and spirulina at the end, and mix everything well! This cream can be stored in the fridge for 2 weeks.

These spirulina masks should be done twice a month, no more, to avoid tiring the scalp. The rest of the time, wash your hair with a neutral or mild shampoo and pay attention to your diet.
