The benefits of wheat germ oil
What is wheat germ oil?
Together with the bran and the endosperm, the germ is the wheat grain (Triticum). Also called the ’embryo,’ it contains a large amount of oils and fatty acids.
Once separated, it can be turned into flakes or even vegetable oil. In this case, we obtain the precious wheat germ oil.
It is distinguished by a beautiful dark yellow color, tending towards orange. It possesses a characteristic and pronounced cereal scent.
Interesting in cooking, it is also indicated for skin and hair care. It can also be consumed in capsule form as a dietary supplement.
The virtues of wheat germ
The germ is the smallest but most nutritious part of the wheat grain. This is because it is from the germ that a new plant will grow. It must therefore contain the nutrients necessary for its growth.
It notably contains a large amount of vitamin E (16 mg per 100 g), found in the oils and fatty acids (omega-3-6-9) of the germ.
It also contains provitamin A (beta-carotene) and vitamins B, C, and E. As for minerals, it is rich in iron, magnesium, and zinc.
Finally, this oil is one of the few to contain octacosanol, a natural molecule beneficial for the heart. It is thus recommended for the prevention of cardiovascular disorders.
As shown in this study, it also has an antioxidant effect that protects the body from free radicals.
How to choose your wheat germ oil?
Opt for certified organic oil
As with all vegetable oils, it is ideal to choose organic wheat germ oil. Organic certification guarantees wheat grown under optimal conditions, free of pesticides and chemicals.
In this case, the oil contains no harmful residues. It must also be 100% virgin, non-GMO, and free of additives and preservatives.
In France, wheat is the most cultivated cereal but also the most chemically treated. By opting for organic farming, you help preserve the environment.
Other quality criteria
Choose vegetable oil from a first cold press (or cold-extracted). This process carried out at room temperature preserves the active ingredients and properties of wheat germ. Thus, you are sure to choose a very high-quality oil.
If possible, buy oil from French origin wheat germ and grown locally.
How to use wheat germ oil?
In cooking
It has its own unique aroma, both mild and fragrant. It is appreciated for its pleasant cereal-like, biscuity, and nutty taste. In cooking, it is ideal for seasoning cold dishes: salads, sauces, vinaigrettes…
However, it is not suitable for cooking or frying. Its fatty acids and antioxidants cannot withstand heat. You would therefore lose all nutritional interest.
This oil is sensitive to oxidation and turns rancid quickly. Once opened, keep it away from light and in the refrigerator. It must be consumed within 3 months.
As a dietary supplement
To enjoy its benefits, you can consume it as a dietary supplement. The oil is offered in capsule form, to be taken with meals. This format has the advantage of being tasteless.
It is therefore suitable for those who do not appreciate the flavor of wheat germ oil. Encapsulation also protects the oil from oxidation.
For skin care
Thanks to its richness in vitamin E and antioxidants, it protects the skin from free radicals. It prevents premature aging, slows the appearance of wrinkles and signs of aging.
It also promotes cell regeneration, nourishes, restores suppleness and elasticity. It is ideal for the care of dry and mature skin.
You can apply a few drops directly to the face and/or body. It pairs well with other vegetable oils: hemp oil, apricot kernel oil, argan oil…
Its thick and creamy texture is well-suited for body massages. It helps in tissue repair, reduces stretch marks, and promotes healing.
For Hair Care
Its essential fatty acids strengthen hair fibers and reduce hair loss. They stimulate micro-circulation on the scalp and promote growth.
Wheat germ oil provides hydration, shine, softness, and suppleness. It is particularly suitable for colored, dry, and frizzy hair.
Apply it as an oil bath, alone or mixed with another vegetable oil (castor, coconut, avocado, argan…). It’s also suitable for hair masks.
