How do fat-burning actives work?
They stimulate the metabolism
The basic metabolism corresponds to the amount of energy the body needs at rest. It gradually decreases over time, but also after a too restrictive diet: the body stores more and promotes weight gain.
Conversely, physical activity helps maintain our basal metabolism at a stable level. By stimulating and improving this metabolism, fat-burners increase the body’s pace.
The body burns more calories, even at rest. Fat is stored less in adipose tissues but used as energy.
They promote fat burning
Fat burners boost thermogenesis, the mechanism that induces heat production in the body. Thus, they increase body temperature and caloric expenditure.
At the same time, they influence the lipogenesis – lipolysis balance: lipogenesis ensures the dietary storage of lipids during digestion. If lipogenesis is greater than lipolysis, the balance is broken, causing fat storage.
Fat burners stimulate lipolysis, i.e., the activation of the fatty acid degradation process, lipids drawn from the triglyceride stock. These are an important energy reserve in adipose tissues.
They have an appetite suppressant effect
Some also have an appetite suppressant effect and contribute to a sensation of satiety. They allow better appetite control and limit snacking urges.
In this sense, they also contribute to weight loss.
They facilitate elimination
Several liters of water are filtered and reabsorbed by our blood vessels daily. Poor blood circulation and poor lymphatic drainage cause fluid retention in the tissues, thus increasing the cellulite phenomenon.
Through their draining and/or diuretic action, some actives capture excess toxins, fats, and fluids. They facilitate their elimination and help the body not to store them.
They can also have beneficial effects on intestinal transit. This improves the elimination of accumulated waste and contributes to a flat stomach.
How to fight against overweight?
Adopt a varied and minimally processed diet.
Highlight seasonal fruits and vegetables, eat enough proteins (animal or plant-based), essential for maintaining muscle mass and reducing fat mass. Limit sweets, pastries.
As for drinks, favor water, herbal teas, and tea. Coffee is not prohibited, as long as it is consumed reasonably and preferably in the morning or at noon.
Finally, do not opt for low-calorie diets! They stimulate the production of ghrelin, a hormone secreted in the stomach and responsible for food cravings.
Which nutrients should be prioritized?
Green Tea
It is the most common fat burner found in natural dietary supplements. Its leaves are rich in caffeine and catechins.
The major catechins present in green tea are EGCG: epigallocatechin gallate. These compounds are very powerful antioxidants.
As observed in this study, EGCG helps stabilize blood sugar levels and reduces food intake.
They increase thermogenesis and thus calorie expenditure, as shown in this clinical trial. This trial suggests that consuming green tea contributes to a reduction in body fat and may help reduce the risk of obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
Finally, green tea has diuretic properties. It promotes waste elimination and helps maintain a flat stomach. Matcha, a powder made from tea leaves highly concentrated in active ingredients, is a good option.
Guarana
Guarana is also very rich in caffeine, known here as “guaranine.” It is an excellent stimulant and energizer for metabolism.
It encourages the body to become active and burn more calories, even at rest. This effect is even more evident when combined with green tea: this placebo-controlled study showed that taking caffeine and EGCG capsules led to a significant increase in calorie expenditure over 24 hours.
Finally, as shown in this study, it regulates adipogenesis, meaning the storage of lipids.
Kola Nut
This nut is rich in caffeine and theobromine. These compounds give it stimulating and energizing properties. It facilitates fat metabolism and limits their storage.
Kola nut is often associated with green tea and guarana in fat-burning dietary supplements. It aids in slimming down and helps in weight control.
Konjac
This plant root contains fibers called glucomannans, which have the ability to swell in the stomach in the presence of water. This creates an almost immediate appetite suppressant effect.
As shown in a clinical study on 72 type II diabetics who received konjac for 65 days, it also promotes blood sugar regulation and has positive effects on cholesterol.
Carnitine
Carnitine is an amino acid involved in the fat-burning process.
It belongs to the amino acids known as “fat transporters.” It transports fatty acids to the mitochondria so that they are transformed into energy rather than stored. It is appreciated by athletes for weight loss and metabolism acceleration.
It is available as a supplement, but it is better absorbed through diet. Red meat is by far the main source, but it is also found in dairy products, avocados, and tempeh.
Minerals and Trace Elements
A deficiency in certain minerals and trace elements seems to be linked to weight gain.
Magnesium, for example, is one of the essential minerals for the normal functioning of our body.
It participates in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body: it notably contributes to the body’s energy metabolism and muscle function, and various studies confirm its role in blood sugar regulation.
Thus, this review of trials indicates that magnesium supplementation in deficient or diabetic individuals could allow for a reduction in BMI (Body Mass Index) and waist circumference.
Zinc, for its part, is essential for processing fats and carbohydrates. It also supports amino acids in lipid metabolism.
A clinical trial was conducted on 40 people suffering from obesity. In addition to a low-calorie diet, subjects supplemented with 30 mg of zinc each day for 4 months observed a reduction in weight, BMI, and waist circumference, greater than those not supplemented. Their appetite measure was also lower.
Vitamins
Priority is given to vitamin C and vitamin B3 (or niacin).
Vitamin C promotes fat oxidation. It is also involved in the production of carnitine and norepinephrine. Located in adipose tissues, this compound triggers the lipolysis process and mobilizes fat reserves.
Vitamin B3 is involved in the breakdown of lipids. It transforms them into a source of energy for the body.
In what form?
In capsules and tablets
This is the most common format. Capsules and tablets have the advantage of being easy to take and tasteless. However, these supplements do not all have the same concentration of actives.
Make sure to choose a fat burner that is sufficiently potent and has good bioavailability. It should also be natural, without additives and preservatives. Preferably opt for plant-based and organic-certified capsules.
In powder
Guarana, amino acids, or even green tea are often offered in powder form. This format is minimally processed and generally well-concentrated in actives.
The powder mixes easily in a glass of water or fruit juice. It can also be added to smoothies, drinks, and protein shakes.
In gummies
Gummies are chewable candies. Those intended for fat burning contain various plant extracts, vitamins, and/or minerals that support metabolism and combustion.
These dietary supplements are fun, attractive, and tasty. However, they sometimes contain sugar. Therefore, they should be consumed in moderation, especially in a weight loss diet.
In ampoules
These are most often plant complexes. In ampoules, the fat-burning actives are present in aqueous extract form. This format is interesting for carrying out a treatment for a few days or weeks.
They generally contain green tea and guarana in concentrated form. Ampoules are easy to take: you just need to dilute them in a large glass of water.
Conservation is often limited, and the taste is more pronounced.
In liquid solution
The liquid form is reserved for aqueous plant extracts, caffeine, vitamin C, and amino acids like carnitine.
These drinkable solutions are often well-concentrated and directly absorbable by the body.
In tea and infusion
Fat-burning teas are composed of a mixture of plants such as green tea, guarana, or mate.
They can also contain diuretic plants and draining herbs like meadowsweet, hibiscus, mint, or verbena.
They generally need to be taken several times a day to hope for a significant effect, and the sometimes strong taste can deter some from using them.
Purchase criteria
1. Concentration in actives
Part of the effectiveness of the dietary supplement depends on its concentration in actives.
Favor products with the shortest possible list of ingredients to hope for a sufficient concentration in actives.
– 500 mg of green tea extract in capsules per day is recommended, or 2 grams (1 teaspoon) of tea leaves 3 times a day.
– 1000 mg of Konjac 3 times a day, with a large glass of water, to achieve the appetite suppressant effect.
– Zinc minerals should be taken at a content of 15 mg per day, and a supplementation of magnesium 300 mg per day is recommended as a 3-month treatment.
Finally, for other nutrients, like L-carnitine, there is no consensus regarding the recommended nutritional dosage. Feel free to seek advice from an informed healthcare professional.
2. Bioavailability
Maintain a maximum of 70° for the temperature of green tea infusions to preserve heat-sensitive active compounds. Above this temperature, there is a loss of vitamins and minerals present in the leaves.
Be cautious about the form of minerals:
– For magnesium: favor organic salts, which are better tolerated (magnesium citrate, malate) and chelated salts, such as magnesium bisglycinate.
– For zinc, prefer gluconate, picolinate, acetate, or zinc bisglycinate forms.
In both cases, avoid oxide forms, which are insoluble in water and have laxative effects.
3. Cultivation Method
In general, prioritize loose plants from local and, if possible, organic agriculture, as they are less altered and have more effective active compounds.
4. Composition
Products combining a mix of plants and minerals are generally lower dosed than a dietary supplement with a single active ingredient.
I recommend favoring products with a maximum of 5 active compounds: the concentrations will be sufficient to hope for a significant effect, and you will limit the intake of additives.
Dietary supplements indicated for weight loss generally contain a mix of active ingredients. Each of them has its own usage precautions and contraindications.
Some are contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Medical advice is highly recommended for people suffering from chronic diseases and in case of associated medication treatment.
5. Price
Well-known laboratories offering quality products offer more expensive fat-burning supplements, and that’s normal. A higher price is generally justified by the quality (local, controlled, organic..) and the (high) titration of the ingredients used.
Be careful that a high price is not always synonymous with quality. Brands such as Brulafine or PhenQ, based abroad, offer products whose price is particularly high, for similar or even lower quality compared to significantly cheaper competing supplements.
Moreover, concerning Brulafine, customers often find themselves subscribed against their will to a weight-loss coaching application if they do not uncheck a box at the time of payment.
