Introduction to Twenty DC

The Brand

The brand Twenty DC is positioned in a booming sector: collagen dietary supplements. It was launched in 2021 by two entrepreneurs, Stéphane Viscuso and Maxime Barret.

The first is the founder of the French group N4Brands, created in 1999. This family business, located in the Alps in Voiron, specializes in the fields of fitness, nutrition, health, and beauty.

Maxime Barret is an entrepreneur, after studying engineering and international business.

Through its products, the brand is committed to respecting 3 fundamental commitments:

• Concerned about the environment, it prioritizes ingredients of optimal quality and natural origin
• With a view to sustainable innovation, it favors short circuits between players
• To ensure better bioavailability, the product formulations are optimal

These supplements can be consumed as soon as collagen production decreases, from the age of 20 (“Twenty” in English) onwards, without any age limit. Better late than never to benefit from collagen’s advantages.

A little anecdote: Twenty precisely refers to the age at which collagen production decreases and D.C is a nod to the city of Washington.

I do not recommend this supplementation for children and adolescents. The same applies to pregnant and breastfeeding women, even though none of the ingredients are harmful to the mother and child.

In any case, I recommend seeking the advice of a doctor or pharmacist before starting your cure.

The Products

As of today, Twenty DC offers three collagen-based dietary supplements in the form of soluble powders to be diluted in water.

Neutral flavor, strawberry, caramel chocolate, vanilla, peach tea, kiwi raspberry, there is something for every taste and goal:

• Marine collagen: strengthened joints, silky hair, improved mobility
• Marine collagen + Ovoderm® (natural anti-aging active ingredient): refined skin texture, more beautiful nails and hair, slowing of skin relaxation
• Pure bovine collagen: skin hydration and wrinkle reduction

For my part, I tested the Collagen Magnificent Skin peach tea flavor (marine collagen + Ovoderm®) for 28 days.

Produit ★★★★☆

Parcel and Packaging

I received my package at home within 48 hours, the delivery is very fast. Upon opening it, I discovered my jar of collagen and the Twenty DC bottle, which you will receive for free when you use our promo code.

The bottle was protected in a cardboard packaging, unlike the jar of collagen. But the size of the box was suitable for my products, which were therefore properly protected.

I would have appreciated finding a flyer to learn more about the brand, their presence on social media, and product usage tips. In addition to adding a personal touch to my order, it would have encouraged me to follow Twenty DC and discover more products.

Regarding the bottle, it is made of plastic (which prevents breakage) and is especially BPA-free (Bisphenol A), a polluting and toxic material. Its volume of 600mL is ideal: neither too big nor too small. I find it convenient to carry. 

The packaging of Magnificent Skin Collagen is not overloaded and very fresh. The jar and the measuring spoon are recyclable.

The net weight of the jar is 280g, equivalent to a 28-day treatment for me (knowing that the brand recommends a 3-month treatment).

The main information is clearly visible on the front: brand, product name, ingredients, and flavor.

On the back, you find the list of ingredients, collagen peptide and Ovoderm® (egg shell) contents, usage advice, expiration date, and contraindications. The font size is readable with translations in English and Spanish.

There is a mention of the distribution laboratory, which is always a good sign in my opinion. It is Laboratoires NG Nutrition, a lab based in Lyon and co-founded by Stéphane Viscuso. However, there is no indication of the origin of the ingredients and the brand did not wish to communicate about its suppliers. 

Composition

Magnificent Skin Collagen contains 9.53g of collagen peptides and 150mg of Ovoderm® per 10g of soluble powder.

This marine collagen is hydrolyzed and type 1. Due to a smaller molecular mass (2000 daltons) compared to bovine collagen, its absorption by the body is more optimal (bioavailability of 95%). Additionally, its composition is closer to the collagen produced by the human body.

A quick note on Ovoderm® which not everyone is familiar with yet. This chicken egg shell membrane is naturally rich in 3 types of collagen.

It is a patented active ingredient by Eggnovo that contains 35% collagen as well as hyaluronic acid (skin hydration), elastin (tissue elasticity), glucosamine and chondroitin (joint lubrication).

Two pilot studies highlighted its benefits on improving skin appearance and reducing elasticity loss.

Two artificial sweeteners are added in the flavored version: acesulfame-K and sucralose. As a dietitian, I do not support the addition of sweeteners that fuel addiction to sweet taste and which could promote the occurrence of cardio and cerebrovascular diseases. Moreover, acesulfame-K and sucralose are not the safest on the market.

That’s why I preferred their neutral flavor magnificent skin collagen which is completely free of sweeteners.

On the other hand, I am quite impressed with the results of my treatment. The composition is highly assimilable. From the first week of use, I noticed visible results: smoother, hydrated, and plumper skin, with fewer wrinkles.

Taste and usage tips

I find the peach tea flavor well-balanced, neither too light nor too pronounced.

At first consumption, I was surprised by this slightly salty taste due to marine collagen peptides and the added salt. The brand informed me that the latter gives the product a unique taste and facilitates its intake. For me, the addition of salt is unnecessary as the salty taste is already present.

You can consume this supplement during a meal or snack, in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

For good dissolution, first pour water (hot or cold) and add the powder before mixing.

The measuring spoon allows you to consume 10g of the supplement, providing us with 9.53g of collagen peptides, almost the ideal amount recommended daily (10g) for visible effects.

My advice: accompany it with a protein intake (meat, fish, egg, dairy product, whole grains). Indeed, as collagen peptides are proteins, their assimilation will be further improved.

Another dietary tip to optimize the production and absorption of collagen: consider also doing a vitamin C course (bell peppers, kiwi, orange, mango, broccoli, guava, papaya).

And I’ll finish with a few ideas for cooking with it: add it to hot chocolate, gnocchi or pancake batter, cake or bowl/mug cake batter, a smoothie, a cocktail, ice cream, homemade candies, yogurt, or porridge… 1 to 2 scoopfuls according to your taste.

N.B: If you have allergies to fish and seafood, the brand offers a single collagen product based on bovine collagen, the Pure Bovine Collagen (neutral, kiwi raspberry, or chocolate caramel flavors).

The collagen Peau Magnifique from Twenty DC is priced higher than its competitors, placing it in a high-end category.

This very high price per kilo can be explained by the use of type 1 collagen with an ideal molecular weight of 2000 daltons, and especially the addition of Ovoderm®.

Transparence ★★★☆☆

The origin of raw materials unfortunately is not specified on the product packaging. I learned that it is not always identical (sometimes the product is of French origin, sometimes not).

Not knowing the precise provenance of the fish represents to me a lack of transparency.

Twenty DC has market authorizations issued by the DGCCRF (General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control) which attests to the good analysis of the products and the certificates confirming the absence of heavy metal traces.

Here are the details I was able to obtain from the brand regarding the collagen production:

• Fish skins are collected, pressed, and mixed with water.
• Enzymes are added to the collagen (which is a protein) to break it down into small chains of amino acids called collagen peptides. Its absorption (bioavailability) is then optimal.
• Then comes the ultrafiltration: this method removes all presence of heavy metals.
• Laboratory analysis: each batch is tested to ensure its purity and product safety.

Twenty DC has chosen marine collagen from fish skins raised in aquaculture (in a closed environment: basin, river, or pond). The environmental impact is less compared to bovine collagen.

It respects the principles of the circular economy: fish that are destined to be discarded are collected to extract their collagen, reducing waste and promoting short supply chains.

The fish are still labeled as Friend Of The Sea, which is supposed to guarantee fishing that respects marine stocks.

The Twenty DC blog is updated by web editors, including Olivia Royer, a health, nutrition, sports, and well-being specialist, who is part of our editorial team.

I’ve noticed that there are already almost a hundred articles online:

• to support users during their collagen treatment
• to use supplements in cooking (recipe ideas)
• to understand the benefits of collagen

Maxime Barret, the co-founder, and his team are currently handling chat, phone (customer service), and email inquiries.

According to Twenty DC, the scientific team consists of: 

• two product managers who work directly with external laboratories for product formulation
• a quality manager who ensures that each product is properly regulated, analyzed, and certified

But I didn’t get more information on the scientific expertise of the team.

Popularité ★★★★☆

The brand is present on Facebook (+ more than 400 followers), YouTube, Instagram (+ more than 2000 followers) and TikTok, but it mainly prioritizes the latter two to gain exposure.

The site lists all the Verified Reviews from users, meaning reviews left after each purchase, and it even referenced all 2023 reviews in an article on its blog.

Twenty DC increases site users by 300% each year since its inception. In April 2023, the brand recorded 46,000 visitors. The brand’s popularity is therefore growing.

There are currently no reviews on TrustPilot.

On the brand’s site, more than 300 verified reviews (rated 5 stars) are collected, but not all are visible and the “Verified Reviews” label is not mentioned.

What stands out from these comments:

• beautiful hair with less shedding
• pleasant taste
• purchase satisfaction

I found three recent press articles, which are not sponsored articles, talking about Twenty DC. SeniorActu (April 2023), La Fine Equipe, and Voici (May 2023).

Maxime Barret informed me that he is focused on boosting the brand’s growth by conveying a good image of its products, and prioritizing its development in France, followed in the medium term by expansion abroad (EU and non-EU).

Confiance ★★★★☆

Twenty DC is certified as a “Brand of France”: it delegates the production of all products to a French partner workshop.

It holds the Friend Of The Sea label. However, according to this WWF label guide that I often consult, this label only partially meets the requirements for environmentally-friendly and fair production.

I had the opportunity to notice that the customer service is very responsive. The number is free. You can reach it from 10 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Friday. I waited barely 2 minutes with very pleasant music, and it was Maxime Barret who answered my questions.

By sending the contact form in writing via the website, I received a response in less than 24 hours as promised by the brand (in precisely 4 hours).

But prioritize the chat on the site if you’re in a hurry: I got a response in under 30 minutes.

Regarding CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), the brand highlights that its formulations contain over 90% marine collagen, which is part of a circular economy approach.

Moreover, Twenty DC acknowledges having reduced bovine collagen production by a factor of 10, which is 10 times more polluting than marine collagen.
