Maté is a traditional South American drink. The leaves of the maté tree, Ilex paraguariensis, have many health benefits when consumed as an infusion.

However, this plant can also cause side effects, especially if consumed in large quantities daily.

The presence of caffeine is the reason, and its consumption should not exceed 400mg per day according to the European Food Safety Authority.

According to my research, there are no less than 7 side effects related to mate consumption, which I explain here.

But rest assured, adhering to the daily caffeine doses will allow you to consume mate safely. And if you have specific concerns about your situation, consult a healthcare professional.

1. Insomnia and Restlessness

Just like coffee, mate contains caffeine. It can cause insomnia, and make you more nervous or restless.

Several studies show that mate generally prolongs sleep latency, reduces its total duration and efficiency, and worsens perceived quality.

Effects that are particularly present in people sensitive to caffeine or those consuming large quantities.

2. Digestive Disorders

Some people may experience stomach aches or indigestion after consuming mate, especially those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome.

Indeed, according to this study, the acidity in this type of drink can irritate people with sensitive digestion.

3. Heart Problems

According to this study, like other caffeinated drinks, mate can increase blood pressure and heart rate.

I therefore advise against its consumption if you already suffer from heart problems.

4. Drug Interactions

Mate can interact with certain medications, especially those that stimulate the nervous system or affect blood pressure.

I advise you to be aware of the possible interactions with medications you are taking to avoid any problems. Your pharmacist can guide you if in doubt.

5. Effects During Pregnancy

The caffeine in mate stimulates the nervous system. In large quantities, it can be risky for both the woman and the baby. Your gynecologist will probably recommend that you limit your caffeine intake during pregnancy.

Know that the WHO advises not to exceed 200 to 300 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy. This corresponds to about two to three cups of mate per day.

6. Caffeine Dependency

Once again, like coffee and sodas containing caffeine, regular consumption of mate can lead to a dependency on this substance.

If consumption is suddenly stopped, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, irritability, and fatigue.

7. Effects on Iron

Mate can reduce the absorption of iron in the body, which is concerning for people with iron deficiency.

If you are supplementing with iron and wish to continue consuming mate, space out your mate cup from your iron pill. This will prevent any interaction between the two.
