Beech: benefits, dosage, contraindications

Updated on

The beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a majestic tree from the Fagaceae family, which can reach between 30 and 40 meters in height. It is particularly widespread in Europe, where it adorns forests with its dense and dark green foliage. Its oval leaves, slightly wavy and fringed with cilia in the spring, are alternately arranged on its branches. The fruit of the beech, the beechnut, is contained in a brown and spiky cupule. In phytotherapy, the parts generally used from the beech are its leaves and bark. However, it is the buds that are most used for their therapeutic properties. These contain a multitude of active compounds, such as glutathione, flavonoids, polyphenols, hydroxyproline, tannins, sulfate, and cysteine. The beech is recognized for its antiseptic, antipyretic, and astringent properties. In gemmotherapy, it is particularly appreciated for its depurative virtues and its action on fibro-sclerosis states. The macerate of beech buds is also renowned for its diuretic properties, which promote the elimination of toxins and accumulated waste in the body. Moreover, the beech possesses immunostimulant properties, which strengthen the body's natural defenses.
