Taxifolin: Benefits, Dosage, Contraindications

Updated on

Taxifolin, also known as dihydroquercetin, is a flavonoid naturally found in fruits and plants such as Siberian larch, citrus, and onions. Considered a powerful antioxidant, it affects various biological mechanisms and offers significant benefits in the prevention and treatment of several diseases, notably chronic venous diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and certain forms of cancer. Taxifolin reduces vascular oxidative stress and modulates enzymes responsible for blood pressure regulation, such as the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). It also improves venous circulation, reducing symptoms related to chronic venous insufficiency, such as edema and the feeling of heavy legs.a0

Cognitive Performance
✪✪✪✪✪

A recent clinical study examined the effects of a taxifolin-enriched food item on brain activity and mental fatigue in healthy young adults. After a single dose of 108 mg of taxifolin, participants showed a significant improvement in mental arithmetic abilities and a reduction in mental fatigue, as measured by cognitive tests (subtraction series, visual vigilance tests) and visual analog scales.

Cardiovascular Diseases
✪✪✪✪

Taxifolin has demonstrated antihypertensive properties by inhibiting the activity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). It reduces peripheral resistance and stabilizes systolic and diastolic blood pressure.a0 By inhibiting lipid peroxidation and reducing levels of oxidized LDL, taxifolin also protects vascular walls from atherosclerotic lesions. It further decreases serum and hepatic cholesterol levels, helping to prevent cardiovascular complications.

Varicosities
✪✪✪✪

Taxifolin acts by strengthening capillaries and improving blood microcirculation. These effects have been confirmed by clinical studies in Russia, where a supplementation of 40 mg/day significantly improved microcirculation in patients with vascular disorders.

Properties

Vascular Effect

full-leaffull-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Taxifolin acts on the cardiovascular system by inhibiting oxidative stress and improving endothelial function. It reduces the activity of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), promotes the production of NO (nitric oxide), and protects vascular walls from damage. Studies on animal models show a decrease in hypertension and an improvement in lipid parameters, positioning taxifolin as a promising agent for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Anticancer

full-leaffull-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Taxifolin inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and regulating signaling pathways such as AKT and NF-κB. It also prevents the formation of new tumor blood vessels (antiangiogenesis) and modulates reactive oxygen species (ROS), reducing cancer-associated inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory

full-leaffull-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Taxifolin reduces inflammation by modulating the NF-κB pathway and inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. It also blocks the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), limiting the production of inflammatory mediators. These effects have been demonstrated in acute inflammation models, where taxifolin reduced edema and inflammatory markers.

Microcirculatory Effect

Taxifolin works by increasing cerebral blood flow, promoting better oxygenation and energy supply to nerve cells.

Safety dosage

Adult: 40 mg - 100 mg (standardized extract)

There is no standardized dose for taxifolin, but available studies have mainly used doses around 100 mg per day, sometimes adjusted depending on specific needs or therapeutic goals.
