The effectiveness of ornithine on sports performance has been studied with promising results. nnOne study in healthy volunteers indicates that taking 1 g of ornithine hydrochloride twice daily for 7 days, followed by 3 g before a cycling test, reduced fatigue compared with a placebo. nnOther studies show that a single dose of 0.1 g/kg can increase peak cycling speed in young active men without affecting exercise duration or maximal oxygen consumption. nnAdditionally, in young weightlifters, daily intake of 1 g ornithine with 1 g arginine for 30 to 35 days increased lean body mass, strength, and peak anaerobic power compared with placebo.nn

Although ornithine did not improve skin hydration in a small study of adults with dry skin, daily intake of a beverage containing ornithine showed an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in transepidermal water loss compared with placebo. Ornithine may help improve skin elasticity and reduce water loss, likely by supporting collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier functions. Indeed, ornithine is a precursor in the synthesis of polyamines and proline, which are necessary for collagen synthesis and wound repair.

L-ornithine hydrochloride has been used safely at doses up to 500 mg per day for 8 weeks and at doses up to 12 g per day for 4 weeks.
