What is carrot oil?
An oily macerate
This oil is obtained by macerating carrot roots in a vegetable oil (sunflower oil, olive oil…). It’s more precisely referred to as an “oily macerate“.
You then get an orange-yellow liquid with a vegetal smell and a dry touch.
It is often offered in capsules, to be taken as a dietary supplement to prepare the skin for the sun and improve tanning. But it is also used externally and can be applied directly to the skin.

Pigments and fatty acids
The carrot oily macerate is distinguished by its richness in provitamin A and notably beta-carotene. It is this carotenoid pigment that gives it its characteristic color and tanning action.
It also contains fatty acids (omega-6 and 9) and vitamin E which acts in synergy with the beta-carotene.
How does it promote tanning?
It stimulates melanin production
The beta-carotene contained in the oil can stimulate the production of melanin. Naturally present in the body, melanin is responsible for the pigmentation and coloration of the skin.
With repeated applications, the skin does not tan more but takes on a darker shade. This makes us appear more tanned.
As shown in this study, carotenoids like beta-carotene have a direct action on skin color.
It gives a healthy and sun-kissed glow
Carrot oil is ideal for achieving a nice golden tan before summer. It gives a healthy look, a sun-kissed and even complexion.
Moreover, it adds radiance to dull, tired skin lacking vitality. The skin is more luminous.
It prolongs the tan
This oil is very interesting for prolonging the tan. Thus, it helps to maintain a tanned skin longer after sun exposure.
The omegas and vitamin E give it a nourishing and softening action. Nourished, more supple and elastic, the skin retains its tanned and even complexion better.
Applied regularly, it continues to boost melanin synthesis and skin pigmentation.
It is also a perfect after-sun care to hydrate the skin and soothe sunburn.
It protects against free radicals
Finally, it exerts a powerful antioxidant action. As shown in this study, beta-carotene protects the skin from free radicals generated by UV rays.
Thus, the skin is more resistant and better prepared for exposure. However, carrot oil does not replace the application of sunscreen.
Precautions and recommendations
Carrot oil is only an illuminator and self-tanner. It does not have anti-UV action and does not protect from the sun’s rays. It therefore in no way replaces sunscreen.
Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 minimum) before any exposure and renew the application regularly.
Excessive exposure to the sun presents real risks: skin aging, skin cancer, burns…
How to apply it on the skin?
As a tanning oil
This tanning oil is used before summer, in anticipation of sun exposure (about 2 weeks before). In a bowl, mix the following ingredients:
- 40 ml of carrot oily macerate (preferably organic)
- 10 ml of apricot kernel vegetable oil
- 10 drops of carrot essential oil
- 10 drops of ylang-ylang essential oil
Pour 3 to 4 drops of this mixture into your hands. Spread evenly over the face and body every evening. Be careful to let it absorb properly before putting on your clothes as it can stain!
As a “healthy glow” care
To keep a tanned complexion even in winter, simply add 1 to 2 drops of oil to your usual cream or body lotion. Then massage until completely absorbed.
It can also be applied pure to the skin. However, due to its comedogenic nature, it is not recommended for oily skin.
As an after-sun care
This care oil helps to extend the tan and soothe the skin after sun exposure. Mix the following ingredients:
- 40 ml of carrot oil macerate
- 60 ml of coconut vegetable oil
- 10 drops of vitamin E
- 5 to 10 drops of noble chamomile essential oil
Apply to the face and body, making sure it penetrates well.
