Ginger, a superfood… aphrodisiac?
The benefits of ginger
Ginger is a perennial plant whose root, or more accurately the rhizome, is used, and has been traditionally consumed in Asia for millennia, both in cooking and medicine. It is indeed a food recognized for its spicy taste and its medicinal properties, as proven by numerous studies.
The World Health Organization and the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) recognize the effectiveness of ginger in “preventing nausea and vomiting“, especially regarding pregnancy and post-operative nausea.
Ginger is also recognized as a food that combats digestive disorders by promoting gallbladder activity. Several scientific studies confirm its effectiveness on digestion.
Ginger and sexual activity
Ginger is also reputed to enhance blood circulation. This is due to an active ingredient in the rhizome, gingerol, which has vasodilatory properties (it dilates blood vessels). And it is this potential that could give ginger its aphrodisiac powers! The increased blood flow could facilitate erection and stimulate the clitoris.
In Chinese medicine, ginger, like chili or pepper, is known to be a “hot” food: it literally warms the body with its spicy flavor, but it can also warm… our sexual desires and thus boost libido.
The aphrodisiac virtues of ginger are also explained by its richness in magnesium (43 mg per 100 g). Magnesium is known to be anti-stress, and stress can inhibit libido.
In the year one thousand, the scholar Avicenna was already discussing the aphrodisiac properties of ginger!
Ginger is used as an aphrodisiac in many countries around the world. However, its benefits on libido and the proper functioning of sexual organs have never been scientifically proven. The placebo effect remains: as we know, the mind can determine sexual appetite!
If one is convinced of consuming ginger to enhance their libido, it can only improve through self-conviction. It’s always worth a try, as there are no side effects.
How to consume ginger for libido?
Traditional ginger recipes as an aphrodisiac
If ginger has been reputed as an aphrodisiac since the Middle Ages and in many cultures, you can pick from traditional recipes to concoct homemade love potions. In ancient Greece, the Bacchae, priestesses of the god of wine, used ginger mixed with a mushroom, the Phallus impudicus.
In Senegal, some women wrap it around their hips to enhance their husband’s sexual desire. The Kama Sutra suggests chewing fresh ginger slices and then using one’s saliva to massage the glans or clitoris.
Feel free to try these traditional recipes to spice up your intimate moments! In any case, ginger is a spice that can be consumed in various ways.
Fresh ginger to stimulate sexual activity
Ginger can be consumed raw or dried, reduced to powder. In Oriental cuisine, ginger can also be found candied or pickled in rice vinegar. Lastly, you can find it in the form of capsules, mother tincture, essential oil, or fluid extract for medicinal use.
It seems that to enhance libido, it is preferable to consume fresh ginger root. It is recommended to consume up to 2 grams of dried ginger or 10 grams of fresh ginger per day so that the spice works its effect without causing unwanted side effects.
The most daring can bite into the ginger root as it is, but its spicy taste may be too strong. An aphrodisiac tea can be made with fresh ginger slices, steeped for 3 to 5 minutes in simmering water.
Ginger juice is also reputed as a general tonic and to enhance male libido. In Côte d’Ivoire, it’s called gnamakoudji or ‘African viagra’! You can make it yourself, with sugar and lemon, or buy it commercially.

You can also consume ginger in cooking to spice up your savory or sweet dishes—and discreetly enhance your partner’s sexual appetite: ginger is cooked in small cubes with sautéed vegetables, pork, or chicken. It can be paired with mint and lemon in a fruit salad or added to a blender for vitamin-rich cocktails.
Combining ginger with other aphrodisiac plants
When it comes to aphrodisiac remedies, our imagination is boundless: we often hear that chocolate, red wine, or honey may have aphrodisiac properties. While these are foods that are good for health in small doses, their effects on sexual effectiveness remain to be proven. However, certain foods can be consumed to reduce fatigue and promote blood circulation.

For example, ginger can be combined with maca powder, considered a general tonic, with gingko biloba, which has a vasodilatory action, or with kola nut, which is very stimulating. Some dietary supplements to boost libido and male fertility offer this combination of superfoods in capsule form.
Ginger can also be combined with ginseng, an excellent anti-fatigue, to promote sexual vigor.
Other formulas also contain zinc: this would improve sperm quality. It is recommended to consume these dietary supplements occasionally without exceeding the prescribed dose or consuming them for an extended period (maximum six-week course).
To enhance libido, it is not recommended to consume dietary supplements based on yohimbe bark, a stimulant from West Africa. Indeed, yohimbine, the active ingredient of yohimbe, has a long-term detrimental effect on the nervous system and circulation.
Natural Aphrodisiac: My Selection
Maca is one of the most renowned natural aphrodisiacs: it is said to influence both libido and fertility and has been used as such for millennia in South America.
If you wish to try it, I recommend the Nutrimea brand. Their maca is 100% organic and comes from the High Andes of Peru, its original environment.
Nutrimea is a French brand launched in 2012. We recommend them for their reliability: they use controlled-origin raw materials and analyze the quality of their dietary supplements in an ISO 22000:2005 certified laboratory.
Their products are inexpensive compared to the competition, and their packaging is entirely recyclable.
