What is Selenium?

A Trace Element with Many Functions

Selenium is a trace element, specifically a mineral salt, similar to zinc, iron, and magnesium.

This means it is present in small quantities in the body. Discovered in 1817, it wasn’t until the 1950s that interest in its properties, particularly its antioxidant action, began to emerge.

Selenium is involved in many biological functions. It notably strengthens the immune system, protects cells and tissues. A powerful antioxidant, it fights free radicals and prevents their damage.

It also supports the proper functioning of the thyroid and is one of the components of glutathione peroxidase, a cellular antioxidant.

Where to Find It in Food?

In food, it is notably found in meat, organ meats, seafood, and nuts.

With 178 µg per 100 g, Brazil nuts are among the best sources of selenium. A single nut is enough to meet the daily requirements (60 to 70 µg/day for men and 20 to 50 µg/day for women).

It can also be consumed as a dietary supplement.

What Are Its Benefits for Hair?

It Strengthens Hair Fiber

This trace element impacts hair quality. It strengthens and revitalizes hair fibers. In fact, brittle hair and/or significant hair loss can be a sign of selenium deficiency.

It May Promote Hair Growth and Improve Scalp Health

It is often found in hair supplements, combined with zinc, biotin (vitamin B8), or vitamin B6, for its supposed effect on hair growth.

Moreover, thanks to its antioxidant action, it protects against free radicals that promote hair loss.

By rebalancing the scalp’s microbiome, it prevents various hair problems. It may help prevent or eliminate dandruff, for example.

In this context, it is often found in hair products in the form of selenium sulfide, a compound of sulfur and selenium.

However, further studies are needed to prove these properties.
