How Do Adaptogens Work?

The main mechanism of adaptogenic plants lies in their ability to normalize biological functions, regardless of the nature of the pathology. They do not disrupt biological systems more than necessary and have a regulatory effect, whether reducing or increasing certain parameters as needed. For instance, they can raise or lower blood pressure, calm or stimulate the nervous system, and even support weight loss or gain. They act by optimizing the body's response to stressful situations, while improving endurance and physical capabilities. Among the most well-known plants are: a0Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea): Used to combat emotional and nervous stress, it improves symptoms of mild to moderate depression. a0Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): An essential in Ayurvedic medicine, it helps restore emotional balance and improve sleep. Unlike other tonic plants, ashwagandha is ideal for evening use, as it promotes relaxation without altering sleep. a0Ginseng (Panax ginseng): Known for its general stimulating effect, ginseng is widely used to increase energy, stimulate the immune system, and improve concentration. However, it is recommended not to take it late in the day.

Use and Precautions

Adaptogens are often available in the form of dietary supplements, tinctures, or infusions. However, it is essential to take precautions. For example, rhodiola is rather tonic and should be consumed in the morning or at noon, whereas ashwagandha can be taken in the evening to promote relaxation. For optimal effectiveness, most adaptogens require regular intake over a period of three to four weeks before their effects become fully apparent.
